Heart Disease and Nutrition

Nutrition can impact heart disease in a number of ways.

Heart and Stroke has provided a number of great content on healthy eating to prevent or optimize your heart health. Here are some of the key points they recommend below, but you should speak with your healthcare provider about what is right for you. You can see all their patient resources here

Some tips include:

  • Eating 7-10 servings of vegetables and fruits per day

  • For grains, look for 100% whole grain or 100% whole wheat with the germ listed at the beginning of the ingredient list

  • Try to eat at least two servings of fish each week and include beans, lentils and tofu as a regular component of your diet. Choose lean meats and keep your portion sizes to about 4 oz (the size of the palm of your hand)

  • Be mindful of sugar, salt, and fats, especially in ultra-processed foods

They also recommend considering diet patterns like the DASH diet (below) or Mediterranean diet (sample meal plan).
